Music Appreciation Group

We learn so much about music and each other
— P, Resident

After working at the home for some time, it became clear that some residents with high levels of cognitive ability were looking for a musical activity that was reflective and intellectually engaging.

In response, we developed a Music Appreciation Group centred on listening and discussion.

Each session is built around a theme chosen by the residents themselves. Together we explore a wide range of music, sharing memories, ideas and reflections sparked by what we hear.

Over the years the group has explored an extraordinary range of themes reflecting the interests and backgrounds of the residents — from Louis Armstrong to Puccini, calypso to conductors, Bach to The Beatles.

One resident, a former history professor and regular member of the group, says of the group:

“We learn so much about music and each other, share interesting discussions, and I always come away a little more enlightened.”

In one memorable session she invited her son in to demonstrate the bagpipes as part of a discussion about traditional Scottish music.

‘One person said ‘the music appreciation group helps to build up contacts [between the people living in the home].’
— Highgate CQC Report

The group has also created special events, including Musical Portrait sessions focused on one resident’s life in music, and even a home-grown version of the Proms, where each member curates their own programme.

Now running for over ten years, the group has become a valued space for shared listening, conversation and connection within the home.

It also recently inspired one member to set up a listening group run by the residents’ themselves on another day of the week.
